In Buninyong News - October 2010

Friends Of Royal Park were first formed in June 2007, and we were officially appointed as the Committee of Management for Royal Park, by DSE, in February 2009.

I am often asked questions about Royal Park, and how things are going. Here are a few answers to some of your questions:

Q: Who are Friends of Royal Park?

A: We are a small group of volunteers who formed a Not-for-profit organisation to keep the old football oval (Royal Park) as public open space, and re-develop the old pavilion as a facility for the community, using sustainable materials and energy efficient technology.

Q: What have we achieved so far?

A: We have begun landscaping the oval (with support from The Leigh Catchment Group). We have established a community garden. We have installed a large water tank (to supply the community garden). We have purchased a ride-on mower to maintain the oval. We have hosted events for The Ballarat Permaculture Guild.

We are currently renovating the pavilion (with the generous support of The Buninyong Junior Soccer Club).

Q: What are our future plans?

A: We are currently working with BREAZE (Ballarat Renewable Energy and Zero Emissions inc), to develop the pavilion as a ‘Hub’ for their new EcoLiving Centre in Ballarat (Lydiard Street). We are hoping to install solar hot water and solar electricity as soon as funds allow.

We are planning more community garden beds, and more landscaping around the oval. We always have lots of ideas – BBQ areas, Outdoor pizza oven, fitness trails etc.

We always welcome new members and people who want to get involved and help us put ideas into action!

I hope this answers a few of your questions.

Please remember – we are a small volunteer group, trying to make somewhere special for the Buninyong Community.

We are having our next WORKING BEE on Saturday 16th October 10.00am – 1.00pm. Come and join us for a cuppa, and ask some more questions!

See how the community garden is growing – one of our gardeners was picking fresh tomatoes every day from January to May this year. Come and join our community gardeners and grow your own!
